Growing in Math Skills While Growing Up

!±8± Growing in Math Skills While Growing Up

Mathematics is one of the most crucial skills for a person almost anywhere in the world today. Mathematics is the bedrock for fields such as science, engineering, business, and technology. Whereas 200 years ago the main gateway skill for success in life was reading, today, math has become just as critical as reading for success in the world. Skill in mathematics translates to skill in computers and technology. But what's the trajectory for learning mathematics? How do children grow up to learn it?

In early years, children's mathematical learning is primarily confined to number sense. Number skills that are taken for granted in older children are noticeably absent in younger kids. While a young child may be able to mimic counting from 1 to 10, in most cases they don't really understand what those numbers mean. Younger children typically can't usually distinguish between groups of objects with similar numbers, such as 8 pennies versus 9 pennies. It's actually believed that humans are born to learn with a logarthmic sense of number, meaning it's natural for us to distinguish between 1, 2, 4, 8, etc., but not between 100 and 101. That's a skill that has to be taught.

As kids start in school and continue through elementary school, their numerical and mathematical skills get more concrete. As we are living in a base 10 world, students spend much of their time learning arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) of the base 10 number system. Most children also learn best visually at this age. That is why you will see many classrooms utilizing tools such as base 10 blocks to learn the base 10 system, manipulatives to learn fractions, and the number line to learn positive and negative numbers. Kids also start to learn geometry skills. Again, these tend to be more concrete in nature, such as learning how to measure, the names and dimensions of shapes, even tessellations.

As students move into puberty and beyond, there ability to think abstractly grows substantially. For many students, middle school is the time that abstract thinking becomes easier to grasp. For others, it's not until high school. That's why many schools offer kids both the opportunity to take beginning algebra either in middle school or high school. As a young person's ability to understand the abstract grows, they can better grasp the concept of an unknown or variable. This gives them the capability to solve a variety of algebra problems such as solving equations. In American high schools, it's common to follow first year algebra with a year of proof-based geometry. The idea is that students are now capable of more advanced logical reasoning skills necessary for proofs. While some students enjoy the experience more than others, there's no doubt this same kind of logical reasoning is common to the sciences, computer programming, the law, and more.

As students finish high school and move into college, they take a variety of paths with their mathematical "careers." While some may only have to take a single general education math course, many others start learning a specific set of skills focused on their career. This could be anything from the advanced calculus and differential equations of engineering to the statistics necessary for a business career. Regardless of which direction they go, students will build on their early foundations of number sense, geometry, and abstract reasoning skills.

Teens Need Math To Land Dream Jobs

!±8± Teens Need Math To Land Dream Jobs

The things do doctors, lawyers and architects have in accordance? For one, there're among teens' leading career choices. Furthermore they require a significant information about math at work each day. Despite this, many teens usually are not motivated to receive advanced math classes for helping them prepare just for success in all these future careers.

A telephone survey of 1, 000 12- to help 17-year-olds commissioned just by Texas Instruments unveiled that four using five teenagers believe math is extremely important for achieving their goals of being doctors, scientists, middle management and lawyers, but only half are planning to take advanced math concepts classes beyond their own schools' minimum prerequisites.

The survey exhibited 80 percent of teens wish to pursue careers with medicine, sports, discipline, education, business, military services, law or architecture-many of which require advanced university or college degrees with significant consentrate on mathematics and discipline.

"Parents need to learn how important it can be that they inspire their children to look at higher-level courses of math while in high school, " tells David Mammano, founder and publisher of Next step Magazine, which provides occupation advice to a lot more than 860, 000 adolescence. "The disconnect concerning teens' career aspirations and their plans to look at minimal math classes could lead to students not becoming prepared for college-level lessons or landing the career they want down the road. "

"No really make a difference what career kids choose, a strong math education is vital because it increases analytical and reason skills. Students must take challenging math courses yearly in high class, " Mammano talked about.

He advises parents to partner with their teenagers starting up in middle class to plan out there their course work schedules. Parents can look for resources to support teens understand the additional value of math and cover their careers, along the lines of MomsForMath. org, NextStepMagazine. com or maybe Career Voyages. gov.

A great deal more tips from Mammano contain:

Make Math Pleasure. Tie math into what already interest teens-their spare-time activities, TV or dvds. A great starting place is Texas Instruments' "We Almost all Use Math Just about every single Day" " program in which teaches math lessons depending on plots featured on the hit CBS Show on tv "NUMB3RS. " You may see information about the best quality algebra calculator right certainly, there.

Provide Encouragement. Challenge teens to consider harder upper-level math courses even if they may in no way make straight A's. Parents can issue simply by applauding teens to the effort it takes to do those classes. Reinforcing everyday make use of math at residence, while shopping, factoring, baking or gardening can help increase students' affinity for math.

Get Engaged. Get teens interested in school or community programs along the lines of science fairs or maybe math team games that stimulate these products intellectually and refine their analytical ability.

Identify Career Character Models. Find regional professionals and question about mentorship prospects that match teens' work interests. Teenagers can "shadow" an executive at work to see particular knowledge is you will that field.

Collection The Example. They could not want yourself to know it, but teens search out their parents while role models. Let your young people see that you are considering math and demonstrate to them how you play with it each day-at home and absolutely need career. Acknowledge that the teen's proficiency through math may exceed yours and that's exactly a good problem. Also be aware that they will be learning more math in numerous ways and this unique often involves the usage of technology or teaching tools that could be unfamiliar to a person. Talk with your teen's teachers to better understand these new advancements in math teaching. They'd likely welcome the interest, with an algebra calculator for sure.

Computer - The Need Of Modern Life

!±8± Computer - The Need Of Modern Life

Computers simply mean a machine which can compute. Let us peek into the past and find out who were the geeks who thought about having a device that could perform calculative tasks by recognizing inputs and giving the appropriate outputs.

Abacus developed in 3000 BC can be called the first ever computer as it was a simple counting device. In 1941 a German engineer Konard Zuse developed a first programmable calculator using binary math and Boolean logic. UNIVAC was developed in 1951 and the real breakthrough came in 1952 when Texas Instrument developed the Integrated Circuit. In 1964, IBM introduced a mainframe computer called IBM 360. Apple introduced Apple I in 1976 and Apple II in 1977. The device that is familiar to most of us in terms of looks and functionality was unveiled in 1981 when IBM introduced the Personal Computer.

The main characteristics:

1 - It follows and is capable of following a special set of instructions.

2 - It can execute preset list of instructions generally known as a computer program.

The basic components:

1 - Input Device comprising of a Keyboard and Mouse which are used for entering instructions and data into the device.

2 - Output device such as the Visual Display Unit or the Screen, Printer etc, which lets us see what the device has done.

3 - The Central Processing Unit which is known as the brain where all the processing of data is done and instructions are executed.

4 - Memory is the powerhouse which stores data and instructions in it.

5 - Mass Storage Devices are those which permanently stores and retain large amount of data. The common ones are floppy drives, CD-ROMs, Hard disks etc.

Computers come in various types designed for various purposes keeping in mind different categories of its users. According to their type they have different capabilities and are priced accordingly. The most popular is the Personal Computer which is for personal use of a single user at one time. They come in two types; A Desktop and a Laptop. Then there is an even smaller models known as the Palmtop which can be held in the palms of the user. While these are the smaller and personal types, The Mainframe, Workstation and Supercomputers are the larger high end computers used by big organizations.

They can perform a wide range of functions such as word processing, Digital Audio/Video composition, Internet, Communications and Networking and Desktop Publishing. Word processing capability includes automatic correction of spelling and grammar mistakes. Internet is one of the greatest inventions of human beings. It connects infinite number of devices in the manner of a web.

Ungodly amounts of information are available on the Internet and facilities of communications such as messaging, audio and video conferencing are available for free. Graphic engineers are using computers for editing audio and video compositions. No media production can be completed without the help of these devices. Nowadays they are indispensable for Banking, Railway and Flight Reservations, Education and even defense of a country. There is hardly any sector of business which does not utilize these devices. Important and critical business tasks cannot be accomplished without the help of them.

Just like human beings, computers are also prone to diseases which are created by attack of viruses. Proper back up of all data stored in it must be maintained to provide back up in case of storage media failure. They must be secured from unauthorized use by passwords and must be protected from viruses by installing anti-virus programs in them. Computers, if safeguarded and used properly can create wonders for human kind and can produce results which are unachievable without them.

Tutorial - Game Boy on your Calculator

My first Graphing Calculator video and tutorial. Expect more to come! hw3patch download: www.tigen.org gb68k download: www.ticalc.org SuperStart download: www.ticalc.org (transfer it to the main file of your calc like the other programs). -If you are getting out of memory errors, you must install superstart to play. If you continue to get out of memory errors, clear your RAM by hold left, right, 2nd, and on. -MAKE SURE to archive everything you put on your calculator or else you will NOT have enough RAM to run gb68k. -The command line for cartconvert should read like this: "[directory of cartconvert]" romname.gb name -Calculator memory is limited (especially on certain models) so don't expect to fit a dozen roms on it. -If you have homemade programs on your calc that are unarchived, be sure to archive them before installing as GB68k can cause RAM resetting crashes. -This emulator is not compatible with all ROMs. -Only the calculators with miniusb ports come packaged with the cable shown in the video. For other calculators (ie regular TI-89) the cable can be purchased here: education.ti.com -Any other questions post in comments section. Enjoy! (For all those asking, yes, there is now a GB emu for the TI-83/84. This video is not about that emu.)

College Graphing Calculator

!±8± College Graphing Calculator

Many high school mathematics teachers in Canada and America allow their students to use the graphing calculators in class. In calculus courses the graphing calculator is a required part of the student's equipment. Now the notebook comes equipped with the capability of using it as a graphing calculator. The instructors in certain classes such as chemistry or physics ban the calculator because they have the capability of holding the whole periodic table.

The tool is a great instrument to use for the student in learning certain mathematical procedures that can be used in their future careers; however, the student needs to make sure that they are not relying solely on the calculator for their class studies. This could become a source of cheating that would keep the student from learning properly. It is just so easy to rely on this calculator that most students do not even realize that they are not learning the mathematical procedures but instead are depending on the instrument fully for the answers.

Many of the instructors in high schools and colleges require the students to dump information on a regular basis in order to keep things on an even basis during tests. This works out great for the instructors as their students can learn using their calculators and during test time they can use what they learn to find the answers instead of accessing their calculators to bring up the answers. This is a requirement met by most students during their learning process while attending math class.
